“Consistently scrumptious” in every way, this “special-occasion” Northern Italian is a destination for “high-end” dining with the “Summit elite” (and drinking with local “divorcées” at the “fun bar”); “fabulous” food, “charming” “continental” service and a “nicely decorated” setting are reasons why it’s “packed every night.”

“Consistent” is the word on these Italian trattorias in Red Bank and Summit where the food is “solid”, the mood “cozy” and the costs “reasonable”; sure, they can be “crowded” and “cacophonous”, but alfresco dining, “half portions” and “truly special specials” make these BYOs “local favorites.”
Was pleasantly surprised my first visit. Downstairs is a large bar and small dining room, more lively/sporty. Upstairs is a larger dining room and smaller bar, more classy. Wanted to explore good looking menu a bit more but wife only wanted pizza and apps for that day. They were tasty. Will go again.
All palates are sated via the “large menu” at this “diverse” Eclectic near the Summit train station, where the offerings run the gamut from Cajun to Asian and beyond (though there’s “no more sushi”); brick-throwers say “its reach exceeds its grasp”, but appreciate the choice of BYO or NJ wines. Roots Steak House
Summit’s “movers and shakers” to this “swanky” chop shop set in a “handsome” former bank building; a “hot” bar scene, “warm” environs and “crazy prices” are all part of the “expense-account-heaven” package; P.S. a new Morristown satellite opened post-Survey.

The “food rocks and the cocktails are well mixed” at this “bustling” Summit New American, a “fun place” to be “hip in the suburbs” with a “wannabe-NYC” ambiance and “tons of singles”; “welcoming” fireplaces and “upscale” Craftsman-style decor supply the “warm” glow, service is “reliable” and the pricing, no surprise, is “high-end.”
Westfield
Chez Catherine
Party Size
The “owners’ pride comes through on the plate” at this “as-good-as-advertised” Westfield “jewel” where “out-of-this-world” classic French cuisine arrives in an “unlikely” location (a Best Western hotel); some protest “small portions” and “luxury” prices, but most purr this “formal” “class act” is nothing short of “fantastique”; P.S. dinner is prix fixe only, jackets suggested.
This is the stop you need in NJ, food is wonderful , service as a fine restaurant should be, and a very nice formal setting, staff is friendly not stuffy, the new chef takes the food to higher level better than I had in NY, Paris or London
Chez Catherine exceeds all expectations of a French restaurant. And I mean in France. The ambiance, the menu, the preparation, the presentation and the service combine to make every visit a delight. Didier is a delightful host, and now with Jouvenetfils working with C.J. in the kitchen, Chez Catherine’s fans can look forward to many more years of blissful dining.
A little quaint French restaurant hidden downtown Westfield with a wonderful menu, along with specials of the day. If your looking for a special dish like Duck-Con-Fete call to see if it will be available on your date of arrival. There is an extensive wine list & cheeses to choose from. A bit pricey, but you will not be disappointed with the food or service.
Mojave Grille
- Southwestern
- Westfield
“Robust flavors” fill out the menu of this casual Westfield Southwestern “staple” plying “excellent” fare “with flair” in “simple” digs; it’s too bad they take “no reservations” and some “wish they served alcohol”, but at least “BYO helps lower the cost.”
Theresa’s
- Italian
- Westfield
- 47 Elm St.(bet. Broad St. & North Ave.)Westfield, NJ 07090
“Amazing flavors” shine through the “uncomplicated” dishes at this “inviting” Italian (a sibling of Isabella’s and Mojave Grille) set on Westfield’s Restaurant Row; BYO helps keep the costs “reasonable”, while sidewalk seating is an alternative to the “noisy, tight” interior.
16 Prospect Bistro
- American (New)
- Westfield
- 16 Prospect StreetWestfield, NJ 07090
- 908-232-7320
Nice neighborhood bistro. There is a late night/bar menu which is great if you just want a small bite after a movie etc. The food is good, portions are reasonable and the live music is a nice addition on the weekends. They also have a cigar lounge in an adjoining area and outside tables (sidewalk) weather permitting.
Limani
- Greek, Seafood
- Westfield
- 235 North Ave. W.(Lenox Ave.)Westfield, NJ 07090
- 908-233-0052
“Sole with soul” is the specialty of this “scrumptious” Greek BYO seafooder parked in an “unpretentious” Downtown Westfield storefront, where the fish is “pristine”, service “accommodating” and the tabs “pricey but not unreasonable”; though it can be “uncomfortably loud”, regulars report it’s “more civilized” on weeknights

Cost $41
Housed in an 18th-century stagecoach stop, this “rustic” Scotch Plains New American serves “fancier entrees” in its “upscale” main dining room, but younger folk like the “lively” tavern that’s “less expensive” and a magnet for “local drunks”; in the summer, pay-what-you-want BBQ keeps business brisk.
Trap Rock
- American (New)
- Berkeley Heights
- 279 Springfield Ave.(bet. Snyder & Union Aves.)Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
- 908-665-1755
“Surprisingly good for a place that makes its own beer”, this “upscale” Berkeley Heights pub-cum-microbrewery now has a new chef who’s put a Southern-Cajun spin on the “solid” New American menu; admirers like the “chic”, lodgelike setting and “ask-and-ye-shall-receive” service, though the somewhat “steep” prices and “loud” acoustics are another story.
Delicious Heights
- American (Traditional)
- Berkeley Heights
- 428 Springfield Ave.(Lone Pine Dr.)Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922
- 908-464-3287
Bringing some “energy” to “sleepy” Berkeley Heights, this strip-mall American features a “solid”, “something-for-everyone” menu of comfort-food classics, but it’s the “loud”, “hopping scene” at the “cool”, TV-laden bar that makes it a “young person” magnet.
Jose’s Mexican Cantina
- Mexican
- New Providence
“Voluminous” portions of “better-than-average” Mexicana turn up at these “dependable” BYOs in New Providence and Warren; some consider the cooking “inconsistent” and compare the decor to “Mayan ruins”, but at least the tabs are “affordable” and the mood “kid-friendly.”
Famous Dave’s
1443 Rte. 22 E.(New Providence Rd.)Mountainside, NJ 07092
www.famousdaves.com
- 908-232-5619
The “mouthwatering” brisket and other “lightly smoky” specialties are a “joy” at this “above-average” BBQ chain, so “don’t let the fact that some of the food is served on trash-can lids turn you off”; though naysayers call it “nothing special” and knock its “kitschy” looks (“like a movie set of a Texas” joint), the “chipper” service and “fair” prices keep it a “favorite.”
A TouteHeure
American (New), Small Plates232 Centennial Ave.(Elm St.)Cranford, NJ 07016
www.atouteheure.com
Showcasing “local, seasonal ingredients”, this “farm-to-table” Cranford BYO features a “delectable” American menu with French and Spanish accents served by a “charming” crew; maybe the seating is “tight” and reservations “tough” (it’s “easier to get into a White House state dinner”), but that’s because this “tucked-away treasure” is such a “big-league” hit.
Garlic Rose Bistro
- 28 North Ave. W.(bet. Eastman St. & Union Ave.)Cranford, NJ 07016
- 908-276-5749
“Ward off vampires and have a great meal” at this Eclectic duo that draws “adventurous” types and “Twilight fans” since “everything on the menu is infused with garlic”, right down to the ice cream; critics complain of “overkill”, “blah” decor and “cramped” conditions, but ultimately most leave here “happy and smelly”; P.S. Madison is BYO, while Cranford has a “wallet-friendly wine list.”
Boulevard Five 72
- American (New)
- Kenilworth572 Kenilworth Blvd.(24th St.)Kenilworth, NJ 07033
NYC chic” comes to Kenilworth via this “sophisticated” New American from chef Scott Snyder, whose flavors “jump off the plate”; a “beautiful” setting, “engaging” staffers and “hear-yourself-talk” acoustics compensate for the “not-inexpensive” tabs.
